Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family. It is native to Southeast Asia and has been used in kitchens around Asia for thousands of years. Turmeric is mainly used as a flavoring and coloring agent in many Asian dishes like curry. It also adds the bright yellow hue to that mustard you squirt on your bratwurst, hotdog or burgers. 

In Asian cooking, its peppery, slightly bitter flavor is often enhanced with the addition of cumin and lime. Tumeric can be harvested in Vietnam from December till June.
